DESPITE winning the team silver and bronze in the individual competitions, much was expected from national No. 2 men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi. When Malaysia were trailing 1-2 against Indonesia in the team final, hopes were high on the world No. 19 to level the contest but they lost in straight games to world No. 27 Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira-Ade Yusuf Santoso, paving the way for Indonesia to be crowned the winners. Yew Sin-Ee Yi were expected to bounce back in the individual event, but they failed to live up to their status as the third seed, coming up short in their bid to reach their second Games final. The 2017 KL Games silver medallists lost to No. 47 Bodin Issara-Maneepong Jongjit, otherwise they could have made it an all-Malaysian final with compatriots Aaron-Wooi Yik. With the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) set to wield the axe later this month on underachievers, Yew Sin-Ee Yi may have put themselves in a precarious position. The same may happen to top women’s doubles pair Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, who failed to fulfil their potential as the second highest seeded pair in the tournament. The minimum expectation for them was to reach the final but they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Thai youngsters Chayanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong, the world No. 36. Earlier, Mei Kuan-Meng Yean also didn’t inspire Malaysia in the team event semi-finals against Thailand. The world No. 15 went down to world No. 9 Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai when the team were expecting an upset win. A pair of their calibre are capable of producing a better show.
