KUALA LUMPUR: The name Foo Kok Keong conjures up an enduring image – of a never-say-die battler who fought doggedly for every point against a brilliant Alan Budi Kusuma in the second singles of the 1992 Thomas Cup final. Kok Keong kept Malaysia in the fight before Cheah Soon Kit-Soo Beng Kiang delivered the winning point to lift the Cup. Now, 27 years later, the former badminton great believes Malaysia have the quality and talent to bring the Cup back. Kok Keong was part of the team that consisted of the Sidek brothers – Rashid, Razif, Jalani – Soon Kit, Beng Kiang, Kwan Yoke Meng, Rahman Sidek and Wong Ewee Mun.The 56-year-old was also part of the Malaysian team that finished runners-up in 1988, 1990 and 1994 and third in 1986. He thinks the current doubles squad are not short of talent in youngsters Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (world No. 11), Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi (No. 18) and Goh Sze Fei-Nur-Izzuddin Rumsani (No. 25). In the singles, the cream of the crop and the only player currently making an impact on the world stage is rising star and 13th ranked player Lee Zii Jia. Soong Joo Ven (No. 56) and Cheam June Wei (No. 64) have shown their quality at times against top players but are still playing catch-up with Zii Jia.
