Kris Rodgers, Stephen Taylor, Adrian Kostromski and Craig Gottlieb headed to Saldus, in Latvia, one of Nazi Germany’s final strongholds following the death of Adolf Hitler in 1945. As the Red Army made ground on the Eastern Front and surrounded the Werhmacht's 18th Army, soldiers were held up in bunkers and trenches, until surrender was the only option. Many of them were caught off guard and their defensive military fortifications were left in pristine condition until the area became popular among so-called “black diggers” looking to sell the contents illegally.
