2020 was the year skincare broke the internet. Sales of colour cosmetics fell, footfall in stores dwindled and in their place, online skincare stepped in to pick up the slack. “Even before the pandemic, the colour cosmetics category was struggling as women cut back on makeup spend,” reveals Roshida Khanom, Head of Beauty and Personal Care at global market insights firm, Mintel. A focus on beautiful-looking skin, rather than beautiful looking makeup has pushed the skincare agenda further forward. “The pandemic may well have played a significant part too,” adds Roshida. Makeup usage is down, undeniably and many have used this time to give their skin a break and some much needed rejuvenation.
